In Memoriam: Gajanan Murkar - A Beacon of Social Change

Gajanan Yashwant Murkar, born on July 2, 1940, and sadly leaving this world on July 5, 2009, was a remarkable individual whose life was dedicated to the betterment of society. Through his unwavering commitment and extensive involvement in various social initiatives, Murkar became a beacon of hope and a catalyst for positive change. From his early days as a youth leader to his significant contributions in education, community empowerment, and social justice, Gajanan Murkar's legacy continues to inspire generations.

Murkar's journey in social work began in 1962 when he assumed the role of youth leadership in the Mazgaon area of Delhi. It was during this time that he emerged as a strong advocate for the nationalization of banks, joining forces with Shripat Dange to lead the march to Delhi from the Mazgaon Division. This early display of leadership and conviction set the stage for Murkar's lifelong dedication to social causes.

From 1965 to 1970, Murkar worked as a Samaj Sevak, contributing his efforts to the Gandhi Memorial Fund and the Gandhi Janmshatabdi Samiti, both of which were inspired by the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Through these initiatives, Murkar directly engaged with the community, embodying the spirit of service and compassion.

In 1969, Gajanan Murkar's commitment to volunteerism and community service was recognized when he received a certificate from Vasantdada Patil, acknowledging his invaluable contributions. This recognition further fueled his passion for social welfare and encouraged him to continue making a difference in the lives of those in need.

A significant milestone in Murkar's journey came in 1974 with the establishment of Youth Vani Mazgaon. This organization became a platform for conducting numerous educational programs and curriculum camps, empowering the youth and providing them with opportunities for growth and development. Through Yuvak Vani Mazgaon, Murkar nurtured future leaders and equipped them with the tools to contribute meaningfully to society.

From 1978 to 1986, Gajanan Murkar served as the President of the Dharavi District Youth Congress (S), where he spearheaded transformative initiatives aimed at uplifting young individuals. His visionary leadership and unwavering dedication positively impacted the lives of countless youth, fostering their empowerment and inspiring them to become agents of change.

In 1982, Murkar's involvement extended to the executive level of Janakalyan Ashram Sevadham Khadvali in the Kalyan district of Thane. This selection affirmed his ability to contribute effectively to a broader spectrum of social work and demonstrated his commitment to addressing societal challenges holistically.

The government of Maharashtra recognized Murkar's exceptional dedication and expertise in 1987 when he was appointed as a Special Executive Magistrate (S.E.M.), a position he held for nine consecutive years until 1995. This prestigious appointment showcased his deep understanding of social issues and his commitment to maintaining law and order while championing the rights of the marginalized.

In 1990, Gajanan Murkar's influence expanded as he took on the role of convener for the State of Maharashtra O. b. C. Association, appointed by Mr. Janardan Patil of Mazgaon Dock. His leadership and guidance played a pivotal role in ensuring the inclusion and representation of the marginalized communities.

Murkar's remarkable contributions were honored in 1991 when he was bestowed with the title of 'Sarvashri' and received a life membership certificate by the Directory Committee in Mumbai. This recognition served as a testament to his unwavering commitment to social justice and the transformation of communities.

From 1991 to 1994, Gajanan Murkar served as Vice President at Kudal Deshastha Vaishya Sahakari Patpedhi in Dadar, Kanta Mansion. His involvement in this position further solidified his dedication to community upliftment and welfare.

From 1992 to 2000, Murkar took on the role of General Secretary of Vaishya Samaj Mumbai, where he championed the rights and well-being of the Vaishya community. Through his tenure, he worked tirelessly to address their concerns and promote inclusivity.

In the realm of sports, Gajanan Murkar served as a consultant for the Shito Ryu Sports Karate and Kickboxing Association from 2001 to 2009. His involvement not only promoted physical fitness but also instilled discipline, perseverance, and self-confidence in the youth.

In his final years, from 2005 to 2009, Gajanan Murkar served as the President of Vaishyvani Pratishthan, Mumbai, leaving a lasting impact on the community he held dear to his heart. His leadership and dedication ensured the continuity of initiatives that uplifted and empowered individuals, promoting social cohesion and progress.

बँकांचे राष्ट्रीयकरण झालेच पाहिजे, कॉ. श्रीपात डांगे यांच्या नेतृत्वाखाली दिल्ली येथे गेलेल्या मोर्चाचे माझगाव विभागातून नेतृत्व.

 

समाज सेवक - १९६५ ते  १९७० : गांघीवादी तात्या शिखरे संचालित गांधी स्मारक निधी, गांधी जन्मशताब्दी समिती द्वारे समाज सेवक म्हणून कार्यरत.

 

सन १९६९   : श्री. वसंतदादा पाटील यांच्याकडून  स्वयंसेवक म्हणून प्रमाणपत्र

 

सन  १९७४  :  युवकवाणी माझगाव या संस्थेची स्थापना.

सदर संस्थेच्या  माध्यमातून  अनेक  युवकांचे प्रबोधन  व अभ्यासक्रम शिबिरे राबविली

 

सन १९७८ ते १९८६ : धारावी जिल्हा युवक काँग्रेस ( एस ) अध्यक्ष पदावर काम केले.

 

सन  १९८२  'जनकल्याण आश्रम ' सेवाधाम खडवली, ता. कल्याण, जिल्हा ठाणे  या संस्थेच्या कार्यकारिणीवर निवड.

 

सन १९८७ ते १९९५ : सतत नऊ वर्षे महाराष्ट्र  शासनातर्फे विशेष कार्यकारी दंडाधिकारी  ( एस. इ . एम. ) म्हणून निवड.

 

सन १९९० : महाराष्ट्र राज्य ओ. बि. सी. संघटना अध्यक्ष श्री. जनार्दन पाटील  यांच्याकडून माझगाव डॉक ओ. बि. सी. संघटनेचा निमंत्रक  म्हणून नियुक्ती.

 

सन १९९१ :  एस. इ . एम. डिरेक्टरी कमिटी मुंबई तर्फे लाईफ मेंबर  करून  ' सर्वश्री  ' हा सन्मान व प्रमाणपत्र  देऊन गौरव केला.

 

सन १९९१ ते १९९४ :  कुडाळ देशस्थ वैश्य सहकारी पतपेढी, दादर, कांता मेन्शन येथे उपाध्यक्ष म्हणून काम केले.

 

सन १९९२ ते २००० : वैश्य समाज मुंबई येथे सरचिटणीस म्हणून समाजसेवा केली.

 

सन २००१ ते २००९: शितो रियू स्पोर्ट्स कराटे अँड किकबॉक्सिंग असोसिएशन चे सल्लागार या म्हणून काम केले. 

 

सन २००५ ते २००९ : वैश्यवाणी प्रतिष्ठान मुंबई चे अध्यक्ष म्हणून  समाजसेवा  केली.
